COVID-19: Misinterpretation of Pandemic Data Damages Public Confidence

Marc Saez and Maria A Barceló, members of GRECS, along with other researchers from various institutions, publish a letter in "The Conversation" talking about the importance of correctly interpreting statistical data. In the case of COVID-19, the misinterpretation of the data made by different media can generate great distrust in the population.

Two letters published in The Lancet and The Lancet Public Health in recent months defend the need to independently evaluate the Spanish response to covid-19. We agree, but we would like to complement them with three points that bring us closer to open science. We refer to the terminological confusion, the quality of the data and its availability.

According to the letters, one of the reasons why Spain has been most affected by the pandemic is the lack of confidence there is in scientific advice. We believe that much of this mistrust is caused by significant terminological confusion.
